P2: Best Sailing Yacht of 2008

Doyle Sailmakers is pleased to announce that the World Superyacht Award for the best sailing yacht of 2008 went to P2. At the Boat International's World Superyacht Awards 2009, the 38m P2 triumphantly scooped up 3 Awards: Sailing Yacht of the Year, Best Exterior Styling and Best Sailing Yacht in 30m to 44m size range.

On May 16, 2009 in London, The World Superyacht Awards took place at Guildhall in front of over 500 guests. This was the 4th Annual World Superyacht Awards to celebrate excellence in the design and build of superyachts and in doing so recognize the talents of the builders, naval architects and yacht designers who create the most outstanding yachts delivered between January 1st and the 31st of December 2008. The awards is also a testament to the dedication and passion of the yacht owners and enthusiasts who make the luxury yacht industry possible.

InMocean with Innovation

InMocean, the latest Dubois Designed Sloop from Fitzroy yachts, is seen here sailing in the Hauraki Gulf. InMocean has some of the latest thinking from Doyle Sailmakers incorporated into her sails. The UV strips are the new Painted UV solution exclusive to Doyle Sailmakers, and she has her logo embeded in the Mainsail and Genoa laminates using Carbon Fibers giving the effect of a water mark.

Matt Bridge Joins Doyle New Zealand as Superyacht Coordinator

After serving his 15-year apprenticeship as a Charter Yacht Captain and Yacht Engineer, Matt Bridge has joined Doyle New Zealand to work alongside Quinny Houry in the Doyle Superyacht Division.

Matt's extensive knowledge of the superyacht industry, his understanding of the processes that need to happen to ensure a satisfied customer, and his ability to get the work done have led him to join the Doyle New Zealand Team.

Matt and Quinny are the key superyacht contacts at Doyle New Zealand. The latest Dubois 52 meter, Red Dragon, was just suited with Stratis GPc Sails from Doyle New Zealand. Working with Peter Wilson, the owner’s representative, and the team at Alloy Yachts, Quinny and the New Zealand Superyacht Team pulled off an impressive delivery of perfect sails for a perfect yacht. Next up are the sails for the Phillippe Briand 120’ Performance Sloop and new working sails in Stratis for the Superyacht Alithia.

Red Dragon

Doyle Sailmakers has launched into the new year with one of the largest projects to come from the Stratist manufacturing facility in New Zealand.

The 52m Red Dragon, the latest Dubois Superyacht from Alloy yachts, had sails fitted and commissioned in January, marking a milestone for Stratis - by far the largest sails produced to date, and by all accounts probably the largest custom inlaid fiber sails produced by anyone in the world.

Since Doyle New Zealand embarked on the Stratist project over five years ago in conjunction with Technology New Zealand , Doyle New Zealand has produced over 2,000 racing and cruising sails. Stratist sails have been exported to almost every country with Doyle Sailmakers locations worldwide purchasing the sails in either completed form or as a blank sail membrane to be finished with their own personal touch.

The total Stratist membranes on board Red Dragon account for over 27,000 square feet of sail area – an impressive feat by anyone's standards, with the reacher alone coming in at just over 8,500 square feet. New Zealand innovation products are always at the forefront of the marine industry, and the Stratist Membrane Sails from Doyle New Zealand are being selected by a very high percentage of the new and existing Superyachts being produced due to the weight savings, performance increases and benefits of a sail that can be specifically engineered to address the exact load path on each corner of the sail. Every specific fiber sandwiched between the polyester or mylar laminates is engineered from propriety software and then mapped to a fully automated manufacturing process. Various fibers such as vectran, carbon fiber and kevlar are selected dependant on the owner's requirements.

Super Maxi Maximus also selected exclusively GPx Stratist Membrane sails for their bid to compete in the 2007 Sydney to Hobart race, but unfortunately Maximus had to withdraw prior to the race start with keel problems.

Richard Bouzaid Joins ETNZ 2009 America's Cup Campaign

After sitting out the 2007 America ’s Cup to focus on the growth of Doyle Sails NZ, Richard Bouzaid has signed on as Sail Program Coordinator for Emirates Team New Zealand.

The Bouzaid name is iconic with sailing in New Zealand beginning with Richard’s grandfather who started a sailmaking company in the early 1920s through the generations to Richard, whose sailing resumé continues the Bouzaid reputation as an outstanding yachting family.

Richard will take up his leadership role with Emirates Team New Zealand in January 2008. Richard will also be able to continue to assist with special projects for Doyle Sailmakers.With the introduction of a redesigned AC class, Emirates Team New Zealand is looking to add a new perspective to their sail design program.Richard commented: "The new class of yacht presents many challenges to mounting a successful campaign and will require a lot of innovative designers and yachtsmen to work closely together. I am excited by the prospect and look forward to contributing to the team.”Richard brings to ETNZ the same experience and know-how that he has brought to the Doyle Sail Group for the past 12 years. His sailing experience includes 2 America’s Cups, 3 Volvo Round the World races and World Championships in various classes.

Doyle Sailmakers is proud have been a sponsor of the 2007 Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin held in Palma, Mallorca June 16th through June 19th. Fifty two superyachts competed in the Bay of Palma over three days. The overall winner of the Cup was Hetairos, a 140 foot Bruce King designed ketch built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 1993.

Big Boys, Major Toys at the St. Barth's Bucket

The world's fastest superyachts gather for the St. Barth's Bucket to battle on the water and unwind at cocktail parties onboard the fleet, moored stern-to on the quay. As usual, Doyle-powered boats claimed some silver: Kaori, a 118-foot Paine-designed sloop, took the Grand Dame division, and the 289-foot, Dyna-Rigged Maltese Falcon took the Perini Navi Best Overall award. It just goes to show that, big or small, when you want to go fast, go Doyle.

Mirabella V and Maltese Falcon Face Off

The two largest private sailing yachts in the word, both powered by Doyle Sailmakers, sailed side by side outside of Monaco Harbor. Maltese Falcon is the world's largest clipper ship, and Mirabella V (M V) is the world's largest single masted yacht. Tom Perkins, owner of the Maltese Falcon, describes the sail, "It was an overcast day with the true wind was out of the N.E. at twenty knots with gusts to twenty five, and M V set her full main with a big jib and a staysail---she was really powered up, and designer Ron Holland was aboard to supervise the sail trim. We had (of course) everything set as well, and I need to note to our respective insurance carriers that we were NOT racing---we were just sailing together as fast as possible, purely to be sociable. On the wind, both yachts held each other, neither gaining or losing. Our GPS showed 14.5 knots, and it was the same for M V. The Falcon buried her rail a couple of times in the gusts, and finally we furled our mizzen royal to ease the helm, but we didn't slow at all. We sailed together for about twelve miles and then we bore off for a speed run. The Falcon cranked up to 17 knots and we pulled a little ahead. The photos show M V really screaming through the waves, looking very, very fast, and very, very beautiful."

James Scott-Anderson, a J-class tactician, was on board Mirabella V reporting for BYM News. James reported that "Once [the main] was up, the number two jib was unfurled and we had about 10 to 18 knots of breeze and were sailing upwind on a close reach with the wind at 75 degrees apparent. The Falcon was about quarter of a mile from of us. We were heeling 15 degrees which was very comfortable sailing, but the speed was surprising. We were doing 15 to 16 knots and this was just on GPS data. Once we settled in, we found that we were able to match the Falcon’s speed – a big surprise even though this point of sail is not the Falcon’s best. It was nonetheless a great thing, as her hull length and sail area is greater than Mirabella’s."

Maltese Falcon Wins Perini Navi Cup 2006

The Perini Navi Cup was held in the waters off the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo in Sardinia September 7th to September 10th, 2006. Congratulations to the Doyle powered Maltese Falcon, winner of the 2006 Perini Navi Cup.

Tom Perkins reported that "the wind never exceeded 10 knots for the two-race series, with the average wind speed about six knots. Our toughest competitor was the Ed Dubois-designed Squall, which took first to our second in the first race, but then second to our tie-breaking first in the second race. We were the fastest around the course on both days, and everyone was amazed at Falcon's ability to point as high as any of the other yachts - and with good VMG, too. It was a wonderful first race for us, as we have many ideas for going faster. As I write, we're sailing through the Straits of Bonifacio at 18 knots." For complete results, click here.

Andromeda la Dea Sea Trials on a Perfect Winter Day

On Wednesday 16th of August after an extensive refit Andromeda la Dea commenced her sea trials. The light airs were ideal for checking the systems on the boat but as the captain Mac Auwers said "I can't wait to try these sails in a blow." The sails are paneled Carbon Vectran and a replacement for the last suit that have circumnavigated the world and crossed the Atlantic.

Maltese Falcon Completes First Sail Trial

The 88-meter Clipper Yacht Maltese Falcon successfully completed her first sail trial on the Bosphorus sea on June 7th with an offshore breeze that gradually increased from 8 to 16 knots. Maltese Falcon was designed and constructed by a collaboration of Perini Navi, Ken Freivokh, and Dijkstra & Partners. Maltese Falcon Launched

Perini Navi successfully launched the Ken Freivokh-designed Maltese Falcon at Yildiz Yard in Tuzla, Turkey. At 289 feet long, a displacement of 1,240 tons, and draft of 19.7 feet, the Maltese Falcon is the largest private sailing yacht in the world. With her three 191-foot tall rotating masts and 25,791 square feet of sail area, the Maltese Falcon is a truly revolutionary yacht. Based on the DynaRig square rig concept, each mast carries five separate square sails engineered by DOYLE Sailmakers. Sea trials and delivery are scheduled for early this summer.
