Doyle Sailmakers Delivers Sails to 60m Perini Navi Sloop Perseus^3


After over two years of design, engineering and construction, Doyle Sailmakers has fit sails on the impressive new Perini Navi Sloop, Perseus^3 in La Spezia, Italy this past week.  The sail inventory, produced in Salem, Massachusetts, is one of the largest and most complex ever assembled, and will provide a breathtaking and unprecedented racing and sailing experience for the owners and crew. Perseus^3 stands apart from her peers with both her carbon clearcoat mast – one of the world’s tallest – and for her A2 Spinnaker – the world’s largest sail – measuring in at 28,010 square feet (2,602 square meters).

Two years’ worth of work came together in two days in Italy, as the Mainsail, Reacher and Blade Jib were fitted for the first time.  The yacht will now begin her series of sea trials and sail system trials, gradually adding in the remainder of this spectacular racing inventory.

From the onset, performance was the clear goal of this project. Doyle Sailmakers was involved with the process from the beginning, working with Ron Holland Design, Perini Navi and Future Fibres to optimize every aspect of the sailing experience.   The mast was carefully engineered to assist with the massive sail area of the yacht.  From Doyle Sailmaker’s end, the size of the sails entailed a novel approach to both engineering the materials and sail handling.  Taking it one step further, Doyle CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) addressed the challenges of properly balancing the load on the three headstays, with the additional Code 0 Torque Rope, while still maintaining an acceptable headstay sag for the racing requirements of the yacht.  Working with the engineers at Perini Navi, Future Fibers and Germanisher-Lloyd, Doyle CFD helped establish the proper balance and stability of loads on the stays and the sails.

Doyle CFD Analysis

Doyle Sailmakers has long been known for its innovation and this project is no exception.  With prior experience coming from M5, Athos and Kokomo III, Doyle Sailmakers constantly adds new innovations and continues to enhance the overall sailing experience.  New developments for this project include  an inboard end fitting for the battens that isolates both the forward compression of the battens as well as eliminating vertical shifting.  This new design ensures that the custom Perini Navi slides will enter the track without compromising the luff tape – essential to reliable sailing with rollboom mainsails.  Additionally, the working jib, hoisted on a removable inner forestay, necessitates innovative soft hanks that automatically change in diameter as the sail is lowered to allow the sail flake over the larger diameter torque tube at the base of the torque rope.

Perseus^3 is the first vessel from Perini Navi to include a bow sprit – enabling the yacht to carry a number of massive downwind racing sails.  The two spinnakers are among the largest sails ever made. The A2 measures in at 28,010 square feet (2602 square meters) and utilizes over 3,200 yards of cloth.  Initially, there was no existing fabric capable of delivering high performance, light weight and a ‘soft hand’ for handling.  The solution was an extensively tested fabric that blends Polyester with Dyneema – giving the cloth high strength as well as tear resistance.

The Code 0 will also fly off the sprit, and is being furled on the largest Top Down Furling Cable ever created by Future Fibres.  After previous success with Top Down Furling for Code 0’s – with the cable in a contained luff sleeve – this was selected for Perseus^3 to enable the crew to quickly furl the sail and stow it easily.  The Code 0 has been constructed  using Doyle Sailmaker’s proprietary Stratis process, with curved radial seams to follow the path of the loads and enable precise shaping, high strength and minimal weight.

Main and BoomThe mast and boom for Perseus^3 were produced by Future Fibers, and at  75.8m the mast stands among the three tallest rigs ever built in the world.  “We have managed to produce a tube with a perfect exterior surface and a flawless Clearcote gloss Carbon finish with zero filler – which can add up to 3 per cent to the weight of a mast,” according to Future Fibres.   The mast weight is optimized at 16.4 tonnes.  Similarly, the 23.4m carbon fiber furling boom has been manufactured using pre-preg carbon improving structural performance and weight, compared with standard wet–laminate construction. The boom features a new mandrel furling and locking system, as a result of extensive testing and prototyping.

In order to ensure safe sailing, Perseus^3 will feature an exclusive Rig Load Monitoring System that monitors the loads acting on the sails and rig components through a series of strain gauges.

For the handling and control of the impressive sailing system, Perseus^3 features the new generation of Perini Navi captive winches and furlers. The jib winches pull a maximum load of 30 tonnes and have a maximum line speed of 40 meters per minute. Electric variable speed motors and furlers, duly synchronized and monitored by the Perini Navi Automated Sail Handling System, dramatically improve furling and deploy times while speeding the tacking and jibing time by over 75% compared to vessels of the previous generation.

2011 St. Barths Bucket Brings Together World’s Largest Superyachts

Doyle Sailmakers is proud to have sponsored the St. Barths Bucket Regatta held March 25-27, 2011. This year marked the 25th year of Bucket racing – and the 15th edition of the St Barths Bucket. Of the 40 superyachts competing in this legendary event, 15 were new to the Bucket fleet. The average length of yacht was a staggering 64 meters. Lined up bow to stern, the yachts would measure almost three kilometers.

It was a spectacular sight to be seen with the 89m dyna rig Maltese Falcon, 75m Mirabella V and 58m Kokomo III all on the same starting line at the 2011 St. Barths Bucket with 100% Doyle Sails.

During three days of racing, the fleet of 40 superyachts raced around the volcanic island counterclockwise on day one, tackled the infamous “Not So Wiggly Course” on day two, and on day three raced around the island clockwise. The fleet is divided into three categories: Les Elegantes des Mers for the J Class, Les Grandes Dames des Mers for the Cruising Class, and Les Gazelles des Mers for the Racing Class, making the racing more equally competitive and safer. The races are pursuit format, with staggered starts according to each yacht’s rating. The slowest boat is first off the line, and the rest of the fleet starts at time intervals determined by each boat’s predicted elapsed time around the course. Theoretically in a pursuit race, all the yachts will cross the finish line at the same time.

Mirabella V and Kokomo III carried the latest Doyle Stratis sails, while Maltese Falcon carried her 25,791 square feet of Dacron Doyle sails that have taken her over 90,000 miles.

The 96´sloop Symmetry with a full inventory of Doyle Stratis upwind and Doyle downwind sails came in 3rd Overall and 2nd in Les Gazelles.

Perhaps the belle of the ball was the 37m AXIA, one of the smallest yachts in Les Grandes Dames, who won her class with her new Doyle Stratis sails.

The Ron Holland designed Blue Too came in 3rd in Les Grand Dames. Blue Too was delivered to its new Owner just six weeks before the Bucket. Blue Too was powered by Doyle Stratis Carbon/Vectran sails and Doyle downwind sails. This was the owner’s first Bucket as an Owner and what an impressive first Bucket it was for him, the Captain and Crew.

In addition to coming in 3rd in class, Blue Too won the Alloy Cup, for best performance by an Alloy Yacht. The four Alloy Yacht competitors included: Kokomo III 58m, Genevieve 38m, Blue Too 34m, and Paraiso 32m.

The 38m P2 won the Perini Navi Cup, awarded to the Perini-Navi Yacht with the best result. Of the 40 yachts competing, the seven Perini-Navi yachts include: Maltese Falcon 88m, Parsifal III 54m, Klosters 47m, Antara 46m, Helios II 45m, and P2 38m.

Maltese Falcon won the Vitter’s Shipyard Seamanship Trophy, awarded to the yacht that demonstrates the best seamanship and sportsmanship in the interest of promoting safety on the race course. This award recognizes the yacht that best demonstrates the understanding that superyachts have serious limitations operating safely in close quarters and value safety well above performance.

In addition to coming in 1st in Les Grand Dames, AXIA also successfully defended the Skullduggery Cravat, holding the trophy for the best Bucket humor for 3 years running. The Skullduggery Cravat is awarded to the yacht and crew who display the best Bucket humor and promulgates non-adult behavior.

Big Boys, Major Toys at the St. Barth’s Bucket

The world’s fastest superyachts gather for the St. Barth’s Bucket to battle on the water and unwind at cocktail parties onboard the fleet, moored stern-to on the quay. As usual, Doyle-powered boats claimed some silver: Kaori, a 118-foot Paine-designed sloop, took the Grand Dame division, and the 289-foot, Dyna-Rigged Maltese Falcon took the Perini Navi Best Overall award. It just goes to show that, big or small, when you want to go fast, go Doyle.

The two largest private sailing yachts in the word, both powered by Doyle Sailmakers, sailed side by side outside of Monaco Harbor. Maltese Falcon is the world’s largest clipper ship, and Mirabella V (M V) is the world’s largest single masted yacht. Tom Perkins, owner of the Maltese Falcon, describes the sail, “It was an overcast day with the true wind was out of the N.E. at twenty knots with gusts to twenty five, and M V set her full main with a big jib and a staysail—she was really powered up, and designer Ron Holland was aboard to supervise the sail trim. We had (of course) everything set as well, and I need to note to our respective insurance carriers that we were NOT racing—we were just sailing together as fast as possible, purely to be sociable. On the wind, both yachts held each other, neither gaining or losing. Our GPS showed 14.5 knots, and it was the same for M V. The Falcon buried her rail a couple of times in the gusts, and finally we furled our mizzen royal to ease the helm, but we didn’t slow at all. We sailed together for about twelve miles and then we bore off for a speed run. The Falcon cranked up to 17 knots and we pulled a little ahead. The photos show M V really screaming through the waves, looking very, very fast, and very, very beautiful.”

James Scott-Anderson, a J-class tactician, was on board Mirabella V reporting for BYM News. James reported that “Once [the main] was up, the number two jib was unfurled and we had about 10 to 18 knots of breeze and were sailing upwind on a close reach with the wind at 75 degrees apparent. The Falcon was about quarter of a mile from of us. We were heeling 15 degrees which was very comfortable sailing, but the speed was surprising. We were doing 15 to 16 knots and this was just on GPS data. Once we settled in, we found that we were able to match the Falcon’s speed – a big surprise even though this point of sail is not the Falcon’s best. It was nonetheless a great thing, as her hull length and sail area is greater than Mirabella’s.”

The Perini Navi Cup was held in the waters off the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo in Sardinia September 7th to September 10th, 2006. Congratulations to the Doyle powered Maltese Falcon, winner of the 2006 Perini Navi Cup.

Tom Perkins reported that “the wind never exceeded 10 knots for the two-race series, with the average wind speed about six knots. Our toughest competitor was the Ed Dubois-designed Squall, which took first to our second in the first race, but then second to our tie-breaking first in the second race. We were the fastest around the course on both days, and everyone was amazed at Falcon’s ability to point as high as any of the other yachts – and with good VMG, too. It was a wonderful first race for us, as we have many ideas for going faster. As I write, we’re sailing through the Straits of Bonifacio at 18 knots.” For complete results, click here.
